There are an estimated 30,000 biomedical waste generators in Florida. These include hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories, funeral homes, dentists, veterinarians, and physicians.
The objective of the biomedical waste program is to protect health care workers, environmental-service staff, waste haulers, and the general public from risks associated with potentially infectious biomedical waste.
Needle Collection Program
Needle collection programs can help you in disposing of needles, syringes with needles, and lancets that have been used by you or a family member in the treatment at home of an allergy, acute illness, or chronic disease, such as diabetes.
Staff responsible for inspecting facilities that package, transport, store or treat biomedical waste attend a minimum of one training session per year. Permitted facilities are inspected annually and facilities determined to be exempt from permitting are inspected once every three years.
