Bunnell, Fla. - The school year is upon us. Whether choosing virtual school or brick & mortar, making sure your child's immunizations are up-to-date is an important part of your child's overall health. Even though school is already in session, virtually or in-person, there is still time to catch up on back-to-school immunizations

"Vaccinations protect school age children from preventable diseases and help create healthier environments in which students can learn and grow," said Bob Snyder, Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County. "Healthy kids have more time and opportunities to learn. That's why Flagler County parents should make updating their child's vaccinations a priority, even if the student is not attending school in person."

Children who are new residents to Flagler County, as well as those entering kindergarten and 7th grade, may need certain vaccines to comply with district requirements. Vaccinations are by appointment to ensure the safety of patients and to reduce foot traffic in the building. Upon arrival, visitors will be asked to observe social distancing and wear a face covering. Parents can schedule an appointment weekdays between 8AM and 4:30PM by calling 386-437-7350 ext. 7095.

School-age vaccinations are offered free of charge through the federally funded Vaccines for Children program. In addition, the health department will seek parental consent to offer in-school clinics for influenza this fall, and Tdap shots for sixth graders in the spring. Adolescent vaccines recommended by the CDC and the American Association of Pediatrics – Meningococcal and HPV – are also available at the health department.
