Flagler Health Department Recognized as Gold Level Breastfeeding Friendly Employer

July 23, 2019

Bunnell, Fla.— The Florida Breastfeeding Coalition recently recognized the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County (DOH-Flagler) as a Florida Breastfeeding Friendly Employer. The annual award is given to businesses that provide support in the workplace to their breastfeeding employees. DOH-Flagler received the highest-level award, Gold, for their commitment to and support of employees who breastfeed their infants while at work.

“We are delighted to receive this recognition since supporting breastfeeding employees translates into better health for both mothers and babies,” said Robert Snyder, Florida Department of Health in Flagler County Administrator. “We work with new mothers all the time through our Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program, so trying our best to encourage and accommodate new moms, especially those who work here, makes good sense.”

The Florida Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Recognition Program recognizes businesses that provide workplace support for their breastfeeding employees. Businesses apply for consideration and are evaluated based on three levels of support -- Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Award winners are recognized with a certificate and acknowledgement on Florida Breastfeeding Coalition’s web site.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventative measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant. By providing breaks, lactation consultation services, and a private lactation room, the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County allows breastfeeding mothers the ability to extend the length of time they can breastfeed their children.

Over the past year, DOH-Flagler created an expanded space in its WIC program for breastfeeding moms and employees. The new space creates a soothing and private environment for moms, their babies and breastfeeding classes, with lactation specialists nearby to offer advice and support as needed.

The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County encourages all local businesses to support employees who are also new moms by creating designated lactation rooms in the workplace.
