Florida Health Celebrates Healthy, Happy Hearts on World Heart Day
September 25, 2018
Bunnell, Fla. - The Florida Department of Health and the World Heart Federation are proud to celebrate the 19th annual World Heart Day, which raises awareness about ways to keep your heart healthy and happy. This year’s theme is “My Heart, Your Heart,” an opportunity to celebrate and connect like-minded people while creating awareness about cardiovascular health.
“Saturday, September 29 is World Heart Day, an annual reminder that we need to take cardiovascular health seriously,” said Robert Snyder, health administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County. “There are many small lifestyle and behavioral changes we can make to reduce our risk of heart disease or stroke, and improve our quality of life.”
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including heart disease and stroke, are the leading cause of death in the United States and Florida. About half of all Americans have at least one of three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. “My Heart, Your Heart” is a reminder that everyone has a role to play in reducing CVD, particularly taking control of their own heart health and encouraging family members to do the same. Here are a few steps Flagler residents can take to protect their hearts and improve the health of our community:
- Commit to 30 minutes of activity each day;
- Visit your doctor to talk about your heart health;
- Eat and cook heart-healthy meals; and
- Quit smoking through Tobacco Free Florida’s Quit Your Way
